What is wrong with how I've set-up Laravel Valet?

I started learning Laravel with the Laracast from Scratch series with Jeffrey, and I made it midway through Lesson #3 before any problems arose. At this point, I have downloaded Composer, Laravel, Brew, brew sql, and all necessary applications through video Lesson #3. But I'm having some hiccups, and I'd like to get these squared away before moving on.

  1. When I run "Laravel -V" in Terminal, I get a message saying, "Laravel Installer version 1.4.1," instead of "Laravel Framework 5.X." (where X is a given version number). This is different from what I'm seeing in the videos, and I feel like this isn't right.

  2. When I ping "foo.dev", instead of just seeing two packets transmitted as in Jeffrey's video, I keep seeing new packets transmitting every second - generating more than 100 packets in a minute or two - and this only stops when I close my terminal window. On a related note, when I try to access "foo.dev" in my browser, I get the message, "This page isn't working. foo.dev didn't send any data." Same result for the "anything.dev" example that Jeffrey also creates in that video. I basisically can't use my browser to access any new project with ".dev".

(I should add that I'm using MAMP as my local webserver, and when changing the default MAMP option to use NGINX instead of Apache, I now get the message "404 - Not Found" when trying to use ".dev" trick).

Maybe I messed up something with $PATH, or maybe I messed up something the various directories where my Composer, Laravel, Brew applciations are stored, so they can't communicate with each other - I have no idea. But if anyone here with more experience can lend a hand, I'd really appreciate it. I'd even be willing to uninstall everything I've done so far and start all over again, reinstalling everything from the beginning of video lesson #1 - but I'm not sure how to go about that process either.

Many, many thanks for any insight you can offer.
