How to solve attachement/storage problem in Freescout

I have problems uploading attachements to outgoing messages in Freescout. I get the following error in the logs: Impossible to create the root directory "/var/www...{"userId":1,"email":"XXX","exception":"[object] (League\Flysystem\Exception(code: 0): Impossible to create the root directory "/var/www/.../httpdocs/XX/storage/app/attachment/1/7/1". at /var/www/vhosts/.../httpdocs/XX/vendor/league/flysystem/src/Adapter/Local.php:106)

According to the following link there is an explanation how to configure the webserver so that the application can update itself, which seems to be the problem.

https://github.com/freescout-helpdesk/freescout/wiki/Installation-Guide#6-configuring-web-server

In the system status I get the message that there are non-writeable files in my ....storage/framework/cache/data/.... section. The system tells me to run the following command:

chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www/vhosts/domain/httpdocs/installation-folder

However, after running that command, Freescout could not be reached anymore and I just get a blank screen when trying to open the application.

I also tried to update the directory/file permissions for the storage-folder and sub-folders manually to 775 but some files and directories remain unchanged at 755.

Any ideas what I am doing wrong or what can be done to solve this issue?

Thank you.
