Laravel 5.1 - Google2fa Authentication Redirect Issue

I have been following Chris Thomas' tutorial for implementing Google2FA for Laravel version 5 but am having issues redirecting to the 2FA token page after authenticating the username and password.

From the screenshot below we can see that its redirecting to the page but it immediately redirects to the 'app' route and i'm having a hard time tracking down was its performing that redirection.

Below are my authenticated and getValidateToken methods:

I know that it is calling the getValidToken method but it redirects to the 'app' route immediately after. Any thoughts on what may be causing this second app redirect and ways to avoid it would be greatly appreciated.
