ampp server download index.php instead of displaying it

I tried to open my laravel project in xampp server when I give the path of project and public folder where it belongs index.php the browser download it instead of displaying the site my system is linux the version of php is 5.6 . When it starts to download it shows application\httpd I tried to add types in httpd but it didn't work and thanks for helping
