Importing A Laravel project in to another Laravel project as a package

I have spent a lot of time building a CMS and would like to start using it for various projects. At the moment I git clone the project and build the frontend on top of the CMS but it feels like there must be a better way in order to keep it up to date and separate.

After some research it looks like git subrepositories could potentially work as required, or would it be better to find a way to package up the CMS (privately) and then import it in to projects? Would there then be a way to write custom areas for that client only on top of it?
